Pumpkin Spice Dalgona Coffee

Tow pumpkin spice dalgona coffees with a spoonful of spice and a flour sac towel on a marble slab.

Every year it seems there is a big debate over when is the appropriate time to start consuming pumpkin spice products.  Maybe debate is the wrong word, but it really seems to be a big to-do.  In my opinion, just start with it when it makes you happy.  I’m personally going with September, preferably after Labor Day.  You know 2020 is a sh** show so I’m starting now, just slightly early by my own rules. This year even John Oliver weighed in and basically agreed, just let the people have what makes them happy!

The next bone I have to pick is why pumpkin spice supposedly makes one “basic”.  There’s nothing basic about the aromatic blend of spices found in the mix.  Especially when combining them with roasty sweet pumpkin flavors, it’s magical. Okay?  Delicious I say. OK. If that makes me basic, then fine, file me away in your little box.  I’ll be living outside your lines and enjoying things like my newest take on dalgona coffee, Pumpkin Spice Dalgona Coffee.

The dalgona coffee sensation swept the nation, no the world, like wildfire earlier this year.  One minute we were sipping our regular coffee every day not knowing any better and then BOOM, let’s get fancy at home ‘cause we aren’t going anywhere for a while.  I’m just happy I found a new use for that instant coffee I bought for camping.  Apparently, a whipped coffee drink is found in many cultures, Greece, Pakistan and India just to name a few.  This year the drink was popularized by South Korea via, what else, TicTok.  It seems that “TicTok Coffee” was actually a trending search topic at some point this year.  I have a feeling this trend is here to stay.

I now give you my version of the unanimously internet approved coffee drink.  It’s still hot as all hell where I live so I’m really glad the preferred method of serving is over ice.  If it’s cold where you are, well I suppose this might work over steamed milk, but I haven’t tested it.  I actually enjoy the flavor of pumpkin in my coffee drinks and therefore I have created a pumpkin milk that the whipped coffee is then spooned over.  You can use any milk you like, but I love a good oat milk.  Grab your favorite pumpkin spice and your electric mixer if you’ve got one.   Enjoy Pumpkin Spice Dalgona Coffee today for a caffeinated jump start to your fall.  Make it the pumpkin-spiciest yet and check back here for more of my fall favorites!

Instructions

  • In a measuring cup or bowl measure out the milk and add the pureed pumpkin. Mix well with the electric whisk, at least 30 seconds or until combined. Strain if desired, see note. Rinse off your whisk attachment.
  • Measure out sugar, coffee, pumpkin spice and warm water into a small or medium bowl adding water last.
  • On medium high whisk for 2-4 minutes or until the coffee is smooth and forms peaks.
  • Put ice in a glasses, pour in pumpkin milk. Add whipped coffee on top with a spoon. Make it pretty.

Notes

An electric mixer isn’t completely essential for this recipe, but it sure does speed things up.  You can manually whip the coffee together with a wire whisk, it should take around 10 minutes to do so.  Good exercise!
I used canned pumpkin for this recipe since it is very finely pureed.  You can use freshly made puree if desired, but you may want to strain the milk with a mesh strainer or cheese cloth to remove the larger solids.  You can do this with the canned pumpkin too if desired since it too will contain fine pulp pieces.
This makes at least two servings but could stretch to 3 or 4 if you make more of the pumpkin milk.
